Love song conventions: Most love songs typically include a story ( typically about past or current love or idealising a potential lover) and also performance, dance or lip-syncing to the song (typically seductive to the camera). Gangsta- Kehlani This song is written about the unconventional love between two people who have a toxic yet romanticised relationship. This song featured in the film ‘suicide squad’ and was used to describe Harley Quinn and The Joker’s relationship, written more from Harley Quinn’s point of view. The use of the metaphor ‘gangsta’ not only connotes that there’s an unwritten rule of loyalty but also stereotypically gives the idea of someone who parties hard, does drugs, and is dangerous. The song is written from the point of view of someone who is in an abusive relationship but doesn’t see it as abuse as they’re ‘built for it’ so instead it is romanticised as two people who are ‘fucked up’ instead of in a toxic relationship. The relationship’s romanticised because she mistakes the abuse for love and is seen as just as ‘crazy’ as him, which is what makes their relationship seem so appealing. UMG was originally formed in 1934 but was named Decca Records, and in 1996 was renamed Universal studios and its music division renamed Universal Music group. In may 2004 universal music group was separated to different management than Universal studios when Vivendi sold 80% to General Electric who merged it with NBC to form NBCUniversal. In 2008 UMG agreed to sell its music to Spotify where they represented artists like Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Kanye West.
