Song I have chosen

Gangsta- Kehlani

This song is written about the unconventional love between two people who have a toxic yet romanticised relationship. This song featured in the film ‘suicide squad’ and was used to describe Harley Quinn and The Joker’s relationship, written more from Harley Quinn’s point of view. The use of the metaphor ‘gangsta’ not only connotes that there’s an unwritten rule of loyalty but also stereotypically gives the idea of someone who parties hard, does drugs, and is dangerous. The song is written from the point of view of someone who is in an abusive relationship but doesn’t see it as abuse as they’re ‘built for it’ so instead it is romanticised as two people who are ‘fucked up’ instead of in a toxic relationship. The relationship’s romanticised because she mistakes the abuse for love and is seen as just as ‘crazy’ as him, which is what makes their relationship seem so appealing. I have chosen this song because it’s twisted and different which isn’t your conventional love song, which means the video can be more abstract and interpret the abuse and toxicity in different ways. The song is also written from a females point of view so my protagonist would be a female. The song is sung in a suggestive way which would also benefit from a female lead as stereotypically they’re seen as more seductive.
