Universal music group

 Universal Music Group Research

UMG is the biggest music company in the world, owned mostly by a French conglomerate; Vivendi. UMG was originally formed in 1934 but was named Decca Records, and in 1996 was renamed Universal studios and its music division renamed Universal Music group. In may 2004 universal music group was separated to different management than Universal studios when Vivendi sold 80% to General Electric who merged it with NBC to form NBCUniversal. In 2008 UMG agreed to sell its music to Spotify where they represented artists like Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Kanye West.

Universal music group CEO is Lucian Grainge, however he cant always oversee all the subsidiaries under UMG so there's then the Vice CEO who oversee what the CEO cant and make sure what the CEO says is carried out. Product development and artist development are departments in a record label that are in charge of publicising and promoting artists. These are the people who also go out and find new talent. The promotion department are there to make sure the artists are being seen or heard on the radio or tv. The publicity department are responsible for getting the word out about the artists and getting them on front covers. Theres now a need for people to keep up with new media; like social media, so that the artists are promoted to the new audience and are more known. The marketing department is in charge of creating the overall marketing plan of every album the company releases. The art department design all the artwork that goes along with releasing an album, this includes cover art, logos, advertisements, and displays. The sales department are in charge of overseeing the retail aspect of the record business. The legal department are responsible for all the contracts and any legal issues. The people who work on business affairs take care of book keeping, payroll and general finances.
